About the Project
“If a creature is described as a ‘man with the body of a hawk,’ which part is man and which is hawk? ‘The head is as much a part of the body as the rest of it!’ someone might say upon seeing my illustration. It should appear as a hawk’s head. What is it, then, that makes this creature a man as well? A human consciousness, perhaps? But isn’t consciousness the product of the brain, nervous system, and endocrine system—which are also part of the body? And would the neurological structure of a hawk’s brain even be capable of hosting a human intelligence intact? Probably not. How to resolve this paradox without resorting to some obsolete form of Cartesian dualism? I told myself, ‘Oh, whatever, I’m using a human head anyway.’ And just like that, I cut the Gordian knot.”
